Rwanda is located at largely a high altitude: the lowest point is the Rusizi River at 950 metres (3,117 ft) above sea level. The country lies a few degrees south of the equator and is landlocked which makes the weather mostly warm and enjoyable. The climate is strictly not of the equatorial rainy type due to a modified humid climate that combines rainy forests and low savannah plains. Rwanda has a tropical highland climate, with lower temperatures than other typical equatorial countries due to its high elevation. Although the country is located only two degrees south of the equator, its high elevation makes the climate excellent. The average annual temperature across the country is 17.8°C (64°F), with little variation throughout the year.

The central and eastern part of the country is generally of semi-arid type owing to its position in the rainy shadow of the western highlands. The eastern part is generally the warmest, between 20 – 24°C  due to the low-lying savannah plains including Akagera National Park. The north and north western part of the country, including volcano mountains have the coolest temperatures ranging between 17.5 – 19°C due to high elevations. Whilst travelling in the North and North West with Heritage Safaris  (in the Volcanoes, Nyungwe, and Gishwati- Mukura National parks) between June to October, Heritage Safaris  strongly encourage travellers to bring a light-yet-warm jacket or sweater, accompanied by warm night wear to weather the cold evenings. The north and north western parts also have warm temperatures between June and September, however, there is a significant rainfall throughout the year.

Rwanda is known to exhibit large temporal and spatial variation due to varied topography and large water bodies near the country. However, two rainy seasons are generally distinguishable, one centered around mid-February to May and the other around October – December. The dry season, from June to September, sees light cloud cover and occasional light rainfall. With only two seasons, the rainy and dry season are generally favourable and they intermingle. Annual rainfall averages 800 mm (31.5 in) and is generally heavier in the western and north western mountains than in the eastern savannas.
